The following are some notes on things we have learned over the years of filling out engineering competition documents!

CONTENTS

Typical Deadlines

General Notes

  • ALWAYS fill out the documents in Word/Excel

    • Share the Excel or Word document with everyone via OneDrive. Uploading to Google Drive and then downloading to submit can ruin formatting and take many hours to fix

  • to be continued

Table of Contents/Figures/Tables

Quick guide on how to make use of Microsofts tools to make this quick as possible

Setup Caption Style

Select a sample text and set it to be the new caption format

This makes it so all new captions are automatically formatted

Add Captions

When adding a caption, do not just make a new line and center justify. Instead use the caption tool!

Right click your image and select “add caption”

Fill in the menu and hit “OK”

You will now see that this is a properly “linked” caption. The number after “Figure” is a hyperlink

For tables use the same process! Just change the parameters in the menu to be “Table” and “Above” rather than “Figure” and “Below”

Adding Hyperlinked References

Open the “Cross Reference” tool

Select your category (figure or table), ensure you select “Only label and number”, select your destination item, and then click insert!

This will insert exactly where your text cursor was when you hit the cross reference button, so make sure to position it in the paragraph first!
